The Spiral of Life: Stagnation, Regression, and Progression

Life can move in many directions, as illustrated in a simple visual representation. In the center, we see a yellow circle, symbolizing a life without a clear purpose—an endless loop of the same, representing a state of stagnation. But this is only one of three possible directions: Stagnation, Regression, and Progression.

Stagnation: Trapped in Outdated Values

Stagnation occurs when daily life is dominated by outdated values that hinder our development. It’s the state where one avoids a small or large crisis, thus missing the opportunity to welcome new values and a new order in life. This fear of change keeps us trapped in a repetitive routine that prevents growth, holding us in a comfort zone that no longer offers real comfort.

Regression: Downward Spiral of Negative Purposes, Exclusivity, and Entropy

Downwards we see a red spiral, representing regression. A life caught in this negative spiral is often driven by destructive values marked by fear, violence, or exclusive beliefs. This kind of "negative purpose" keeps us stuck and pulls us backward.

Exclusivity here leads to a breakdown of relationships and the erosion of solidarity. People increasingly withdraw, resulting in loneliness and isolation of the individual—a mindset of "me against the others" emerges. The loss of community and mutual support weakens the individual and the collective fabric. This isolation reinforces regression, breaking trust and connection, and trapping us in a cycle of distrust and withdrawal.

This process can be likened to the natural concept of entropy—a state where systems drift into disorder, chaos, and decay. In regression, entropy takes over: relationships disintegrate, structures collapse, and both individual and collective energy disperses without productive direction.

Progression: Growth through Inclusivity, Syntropy, and New Complexity

Upwards we see a green spiral, symbolizing a life with positive purposes—a movement that lifts us to new heights. Progression happens when our values evolve and reach new levels of inclusivity. In this state, the system adopts higher complexity, characterized by openness, diversity, and an expanding understanding of the world and the people around us. It represents a shift towards a more fulfilling and enriched life that fosters not only personal but also collective development.

This upward process can be compared to the natural concept of syntropy—a state of order, growth, and convergence. Syntropy represents the tendency of systems to organize, increase in complexity, and develop toward coherence and harmony. In progression, not only the individual grows, but the entire system gains stability and vitality through mutual support and inclusive values.

Final Thoughts

The different directions the spiral of life can take—Stagnation, Regression, and Progression—are largely determined by the values that guide our daily actions. A life stuck in a loop remains stagnant, while a negative purpose pulls us downward, breaking relationships and fostering isolation through entropy. However, a positive, inclusive purpose can continuously lift us to new heights, strengthened by syntropy, enhancing our connection to ourselves and others. The question that remains is: In which direction is your spiral turning?
